7 Freezer Cleaning Tips

We’re willing to bet you rely on your freezer every day. Whether you regularly buy frozen meals or prepare your own to freeze, you need a functional freezer in your home. Part of what keeps your freezer working the way it should is a thorough cleaning.

But we’re not talking about just using a paper towel for five seconds and calling it good. Since the freezer is a popular spot for long-term storage, it’s easy to forget the contents we’ve put inside and how much of a mess there really is. At Lane’s Appliance Repair in Lansing, we recommend that homeowners freshen up their freezer as part of their normal cleaning routine.

Here are seven freezer cleaning tips:

Turn off the freezer

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way first. Before getting started with any sort of cleaning, be sure to either switch your freezer completely off or unplug the unit altogether. Trust us — doing so will make this chore so much easier.

Empty the ice and unload the freezer

You’re ready to empty any ice trays into a bowl and place them in a cooler. This is the time to soak the trays in a sink full of warm, soapy water. Next, unload all the frozen food from the freezer and put it in the cooler. Depending on how much you currently have in your freezer, this step could take a while.

Remove and wash any removable drawers and shelves

The detachable drawers and shelves might be the most overlooked areas of a freezer. That said, they’re typically some of the dirtiest parts as well. Before starting to clean these drawers and shelves, let them come to room temperature to avoid cracking. From there, wash the units in a sink full of warm, soapy water. One pro tip here: opt for a fragrance-free dish soap to prevent the transfer of scents back to the freezer and, eventually, your food.

Make your cleaning solution

By this point, you’re just about ready to start cleaning the inside of your freezer. First, though, you obviously want to have a cleaning solution that’s both safe and effective. Our advice is to combine either hot water and vinegar or hot water and baking soda.

Wipe down the inside

We are often asked how to make a freezer look like new. You can start by wiping the inside with a sponge or dishcloth. Be sure to reapply the aforementioned cleaning solution as needed. Should you have trouble getting rid of stubborn, stuck-on food particles, try spraying the solution on a paper towel and wiping it over the sticky area. You should be able to wipe it away after 10 minutes or so.

Clean the doors and door seal

Now that the inside of your freezer is clean, the job is done, right? Not exactly. You might be surprised at how dirty the freezer door and surrounding seal can get. So take another few minutes and freshen these spots as well.

Replace all food and ice before turning the unit back on

You’re officially in the home stretch! Once the inside of the freezer is thoroughly dry and you’ve put back the shelves and drawers, it’s time to look through your frozen foods. If you notice any contents that have developed freezer burn, throw them away and organize what’s left by priority. Frozen meat and vegetables, for example, should probably go somewhere that’s easily accessible. Soon after the freezer is filled back up, go ahead and turn the unit back on.
